Citizen's Police Academy

Twice a year, the Pittsburgh Bureau of Police sponsors an opportunity for members of the community to become closely acquainted with the roles and responsibilities of the Police Bureau. The Pittsburgh Citizen's Police Academy (CPA) brings the police and the community close together in a setting that offers a sample of police training to each participant.
Participants receive three hours of training one evening each week for 15 weeks in many of the varied functions of law enforcement. They experience some of the highlights of police training and are exposed to the operations of the police bureau. Participants are taught the basics of criminal law, search and seizure, patrol tactics, firearms and many other subjects. They learn about the processing of a crime scene, how police canines are used, and are exposed to many of the specialty police units. CPA participants meet and talk with many of the street officers as well as the command staff and training staff that serves them. All this takes place in a safe and entertaining training environment.
Instructors are law enforcement professionals who teach both veteran and recruit police officers. Students leave this training with a greater understanding of the police mission and with an increased ability to see how the police serve the community.
This program is not an accredited certification course to become a sworn police officer.
The next session of the CPA will begin on Wednesday, February 8, 2012, at the offices of the Pittsburgh Downtown Partnership located at 925 Liberty Avenue, 4th floor. The program will be held each Wednesday evening, from 6:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. for 15 weeks.
Class size is limited to 30 participants. All interested persons must complete an application and give permission for the Pittsburgh Bureau of Police to conduct a background check to determine if they have a criminal record.

MAYOR ANNOUNCES APPLICATION PERIOD FOR CIVIC LEADERSHIP ACADEMY CLASS

Mayor Luke Ravenstahl today announced that applications are available for the City’s Civic Leadership Academy (CLA), a free 10-week course designed to educate residents about local government in the City of Pittsburgh.

"This unique program provides residents the opportunity to learn how their local government operates to improve their communities," said Ravenstahl. "To date, over 75 residents have successfully graduated from CLA, each with a renewed commitment to becoming more informed, effective community and municipal leaders."

Beginning March 14, and ending May 16, 20 participants will attend 10 weekly sessions on Wednesday evenings from 6 to 8:30 p.m. to learn how different City departments work to ensure a safer, more livable City.  Session topics include city organization and vision; budgeting processes; city planning and economic development; public works and parks services; the protection of water and rivers; public safety efforts, and more. City directors will develop their sessions to include tours, hands-on demonstrations and fun activities to provide an up-close and personal view of how their department helps to operate the City. At the conclusion of the course, the Mayor will lead a graduation ceremony where participants will be awarded certificates. Within six months of the graduation ceremony, students are expected to use the knowledge gained to address a need in the City of Pittsburgh and complete a project within a community.

So far, three classes totaling 77 residents have graduated from the Civic Leadership Academy. The inaugural Youth Civic Leadership Academy graduated in August 2011 and revitalized a parklet in East Carnegie. Other projects by CLA graduates have included planting native plants at the Larimer Community Garden, launching a recycling awareness campaign at community festivals across the City, and supporting the Urban Redevelopment Authority’s efforts to improve neighborhood business districts.

Applicants to the program must be at least 18 years old and live within Pittsburgh City limits and/or be a business owner who operates within Pittsburgh City limits. Class size is limited to 30 participants. All interested persons must complete an application and give permission for the Pittsburgh Bureau of Police to conduct a background check to determine if they have a criminal record.
